Summit County 3-Day Cheat Sheet

Read this on the plane.

AltitudeThe towns sit at 9,000 to 10,000 feet. Day one is your easy day. Drink water, skip the second cocktail, and expect a short night of sleep. Ibuprofen and oxygen bars help. If a headache turns into vomiting or confusion, drive downhill.
Getting HereFly into Denver (DEN) and drive I-70 west. It is roughly 75 to 100 minutes without weather. Snow, ski traffic, and Sunday afternoons can double it.
The Six TownsBreckenridge is the historic Main Street and the nightlife. Frisco is the walkable middle. Dillon is the reservoir. Silverthorne is outlets and the Blue River. Keystone and Copper Mountain are ski villages. They are all 10 to 20 minutes apart.
Free BusThe Summit Stage connects every town and costs nothing. Breckenridge and Keystone also run free in-town shuttles. Use them on busy mornings, when base-area parking fills by 8:30am.
RidesUber and Lyft run here but thin out late and after storms. Have a backup plan before the last round.

Day 1

Arrival and Breckenridge Main Street

Morning: Land and Drive

Pick up the car at DEN, get on I-70 west, and stop in Frisco or Silverthorne for groceries before you climb the last hill.

Coffee and a pastry at Butterhorn Bakery & Cafe in Frisco, or Blue Moon Bakery in Silverthorne.

Lunch: Easy and Local

Empire Burger on Main Street in Breckenridge. Simple, fast, and right where you are parking.

Or Fatty's Pizzeria, a Breckenridge institution since 1979, with a rooftop deck when the sun is out.

Afternoon: Walk, Do Not Ski

Main Street Breckenridge Historic District. Victorian storefronts, the Blue River Plaza footbridge, and the Breckenridge Arts District a block off Main.

Ride the BreckConnect Gondola up and back. It is free, it is heated, and it is the best altitude-friendly view in the county.

Dinner: First Night Splurge

Hearthstone Restaurant in a restored 1886 Victorian, or Briar Rose Chophouse & Saloon for steak in the oldest building on the block.

Or Aurum Food & Wine for a creekside table and a shorter wait.

Night: Main Street Bar Crawl

Gold Pan Saloon, one of the oldest continuously operating bars west of the Mississippi. Then Downstairs at Eric's for arcade games and a hundred taps.

Blue Stag Saloon or RMU Tavern if you want it loud. Cecilia's Martini Bar if you want it late.

Go easy tonight. Altitude does the work of two drinks.

Day 2

Mountain Day and Apres

Early: Pick Your Mountain

Breckenridge for terrain variety and a town at the base. Keystone for long groomers and night skiing. Copper Mountain for natural fall-line laps. Arapahoe Basin for steep, high, and no frills. Loveland for cheap and uncrowded.

Not skiing? Frisco Adventure Park tubing hill, Keystone Adventure Point tubing, or Breckenridge Nordic Center for groomed cross-country tracks.

Mid-Morning: Gear

Ski Butlers or Black Tie Ski Rentals deliver to your condo and fit you in the living room. Christy Sports and Wilderness Sports handle walk-ins.

Ride the free shuttle or the Summit Stage instead of hunting for a parking spot after 8:30am.

Lunch: On the Hill

T-Bar at Breckenridge Peak 8. Ten Mile Tavern or Jack's Slopeside Grill at Copper Mountain. Summit House or Kickapoo Tavern at Keystone.

Apres: The Whole Point

In Breckenridge: Apres Handcrafted Libations, The Maggie at the base of Peak 9, or Broken Compass Brewing a short ride from Main.

Worth the drive from anywhere: The Beach at Arapahoe Basin for the tailgate scene, or 6th Alley Bar & Grill for the deck.

Dinner: Off the Mountain

Ski Tip Lodge in Keystone, a former 1800s stagecoach stop with a fixed menu. Book ahead.

Lower key: Peppino's Pizza & Subs or Bagalis in Frisco, Sauce on the Blue in Silverthorne.

Or Der Fondue Chessel at Keystone, reached by gondola, for fondue at 11,444 feet.

Day 3

Reservoir, Trails, and Departure

Morning: Photo Spots

Sapphire Point Overlook between Dillon and Breckenridge. Ten minutes of walking for the postcard shot of Dillon Reservoir and the Ten Mile Range.

Dillon Marina at first light, or Frisco Bay Marina with Mount Royal behind it.

Driving out over Loveland Pass? The summit pullout at 11,990 feet is the easiest big view in Colorado, when the pass is open.

Mid-Morning: Get Outside

Old Dillon Reservoir Trail. Under a mile, big payoff, doable at any fitness level.

Mount Royal from Frisco if you want to work. McCullough Gulch near Breckenridge for waterfalls.

Rent a paddleboard or a pontoon at Dillon Marina or Frisco Bay Marina.

Lunch: Last Real Meal

Bluebird Market in Silverthorne. A food hall, so nobody in your group has to compromise.

Or Butterhorn Bakery in Frisco, or Sunshine Cafe in Silverthorne for the local breakfast plate.

Afternoon: Depending on Time

Breckenridge Distillery tasting room on Main Street, or Continental Divide Winery a few doors down.

Outlets at Silverthorne if the weather turned. Montezuma ghost town above Keystone if it did not.

Short on time? A drink on the Fatty's rooftop deck or at STEEP Brewing Lakeside Tiki Bar on the water in Dillon.

DEN Flight Tips

Leave Summit County four hours before your flight. Three and a half is the floor, and Sunday I-70 eastbound punishes optimists.

Check cotrip.org for the Eisenhower Tunnel before you pull out of the driveway. One crash can add ninety minutes.

No car? Epic Mountain Express and Peak 1 Express run shared shuttles to DEN. Book them the day you book your flight.

Fill the rental tank in Silverthorne or Frisco. There is nothing cheap between here and the airport.
